The Symbiotic Journey of Dogs and Humans

The bond between humans and dogs stretches back through the ages. Archaeological discoveries and genetic studies indicate that dogs were domesticated approximately 10,000 years ago. Our ancestors held dogs in high esteem not just for their hunting prowess, but also for their roles as devoted guardians and protectors.

In the German context, dogs have played pivotal roles as working companions for centuries – be it in hunting, guarding, or hauling duties. However, as industrialization progressed and rural landscapes transformed into urban habitats, our canine companions' roles also underwent a transformation.

From Workmates to Cherished Companions

The economic upswing of the 1950s, accompanied by the rise of the middle class, ushered in a new era where dogs transcended their utilitarian roles to become cherished members of families. Advertising campaigns highlighting dog food and accessories portrayed dogs not only as loyal companions but also as beloved members of households, further magnifying this cultural shift.

As lifestyles changed, so did the inclination towards specific dog breeds. Today, the selection of a breed pivots less on utilitarian factors and more on temperament and compatibility with family life. Frequently, breeds that thrive in social and familial environments secure their places in private homes. This shift mirrors the profound societal and cultural shifts that have characterized Germany's journey over the years.

History paints a picture of the dynamic evolution of the human-dog relationship, molded by the ebb and flow of social, economic, and cultural tides across epochs. However, amidst these changes, a constant remains: the profound connection and fondness we harbor for these remarkable creatures.

Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds in Germany

While the love for dogs may be universal, the preferences for specific breeds vary widely. A closer look at the data reveals that a whopping 80% of puppy births are concentrated within just 20% of the 300 dog breeds acknowledged in Germany. The above observation highlights that specific breeds have risen to prominence as frontrunners of popularity, owing to their distinct characteristics, appearances, and storied backgrounds.

Figure 1 presents a lineup of the ten most sought-after dog breeds over the past 15 years. This ranking is based on the comprehensive, annually updated Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen – VDH puppy statistics (available in German only).

🥇 1st Place: German Shepherd

The German Shepherd, an embodiment of loyalty and courage, rightfully claims the top spot. Recognized for its vigilance and strong work ethic, this breed shines not only as a reliable guard dog but also as a devoted family companion. Its remarkable intelligence and trainability have made it a favorite among dog enthusiasts.

🥈 2nd Place: Dachshund

The Dachshund, often playfully called the “sausage dog,” transcends its cute appearance. Rooted in its bold and tenacious character, it was originally bred as a skilled hunting dog. Today, its charming demeanor and playful nature have won over countless hearts.

🥉 3rd Place: German Wirehaired Pointer

The German Wirehaired Pointer boasts versatility as a remarkable hunting dog, celebrated for its endurance and sharp instincts. Its distinctive wiry coat and expressive eyebrows lend it a unique appeal. As a family-oriented breed, it exudes affection and patience, making it an ideal companion for dynamic households.

However, while the German Shepherd may stand as the indisputable winner, its journey from 2007 to 2022 reflects a remarkable decline – as illustrated in Figure 2, puppy numbers halved during this span.

Why Size Matters: Current Trends in Dog Popularity

Delving into the past 15 years, the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (VDH), which acts as Germany's representative within the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), reports the birth of approximately 1.3 million puppies within breeding facilities, averaging around 80,000 puppies annually.

Yet, upon dissecting the VDH puppy statistics, a nuanced narrative emerges – an incremental decline in overall births. As depicted in Figure 3 (red line), an average reduction of 1.48% in yearly puppy births characterizes the last 15 years. While 89,528 puppies graced the world in 2007, the count diminished to 69,384 in 2022.

However, this diminishing trajectory does not uniformly span across all sizes and breeds. It turns out that the size of a dog is a significant factor in the bond between humans and animals. It not only affects the dog's capabilities but also its desirability across different life situations.

Recent data from the German dog breeding scene offers valuable insights into the distribution and preferences related to dog sizes. In total, nearly 75% of all puppy births can be attributed to medium and large-sized dogs, leaving the remaining 25% to be shared among giant and small breeds. One thing is evident: “giant breeds” such as Kangal, Tosa, and Barsoi are experiencing a decline in their appeal.

The Fading Glory of Giant Dogs

Giant dogs, such as the majestic Great Dane or the steadfast Pyrenean Mountain Dog, bred traditionally for specific duties, are witnessing a significant decline in their popularity. The once vibrant birth numbers of these giants, which stood at 4,116 in 2007, have plummeted to a mere 2,001 in 2022 – a drastic decrease of over 50%.

Large Dogs: A Prominent Part of the Canine Landscape

The versatility of large dogs as both working animals and family companions has kept them a consistent choice for many. With 25,456 births in 2022, they make up a substantial portion of the canine population. However, the birth numbers for large dogs have experienced ups and downs over the years, averaging a yearly decrease of 2.65% in the number of puppies born.

Medium-Sized Dogs: Hidden Leaders of the Pack

Medium-sized dogs have proven their resilience in the popularity spectrum. With a minimal average annual decline of 0.38% in the number of puppy births, these dogs have consistently held their position as a preferred size category over the past 15 years.

The secret to their endurance? Medium-sized dogs often exhibit higher energy levels and require more physical activity than smaller breeds, while fitting comfortably into urban living. Their balanced size and adaptability to diverse lifestyles could be the key factors behind their enduring appeal.

Small Dogs: Evergreen Favorites with Gentle Declines

COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mixed Blessing for Dogs

The unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected human lives but also cast its influence upon the lives of our furry friends. Intriguing shifts emerge when delving into the evolving popularity of dog breeds during these unprecedented times.

During periods of lockdown, many found solace and camaraderie in their four-legged companions, leading to an upswing in dog breeding as families embraced the opportunity to welcome a new canine member into their fold.

The numbers echo this trend: 2021 witnessed a remarkable surge in puppy births, tallying up to 85,591 newborns. This phenomenon suggests that the period of isolation prompted many to seek the companionship of a loyal canine friend.

On the flip side, there has been a decline in the birth rates of very large dog breeds during the pandemic years of 2018-2019 and 2021-2022. The challenges posed by housing very large dogs in urban settings could play a role in driving this trend. As we embrace a return to normalcy, it's important to acknowledge that every situation has two sides. With the resurgence of regular routines, challenges have also resurfaced. Reports from animal shelters and welfare organizations indicate a rise in dogs being surrendered. Many individuals have realized that balancing their daily lives with the needs of their new canine companions can be quite demanding.

In the year 2022, marked by the reopening of various aspects of life, there was a noticeable decline in the number of puppy births. The count stood at 69,384 newborns, reflecting a decrease of approximately 19% compared to the previous year. This decline underscores that the decision to bring a dog into the family fold was sometimes made impulsively, possibly underestimating the long-term responsibilities that come with it.

Heroes of the Hearts: Mixed Breeds

Up to this point, one might have gathered that purebred dogs rule the roost in Germany. However, the most commonly encountered (and therefore, beloved) dog doesn't belong to a single breed; rather, it encompasses multiple breeds: the versatile mixed breed.

Labradoodle & Co. may not be recognized as distinct breeds, yet they have firmly established their presence in German households. With an estimated share of 44% (ZZF 2022), mixed breeds are a part of nearly every other home in Germany.

Designer Breeds: An Emerging Trend

While some mixed breeds may have occurred by chance, others are crossbreeds that are meticulously crafted by intentionally mixing two distinct purebred dog breeds to create a new and distinctive combination of traits, commonly referred to as a “designer breed.”

Designer breeds often combine the best qualities of their parent breeds, resulting in a unique and sought-after companion. The art of crafting designer breeds allows for a blend of appearance, temperament, and health characteristics, catering to the preferences of dog lovers.

Here are some of the most popular designer breeds:

While designer breeds are a fascinating aspect of modern dog breeding, mixed breeds also hold a special place. These mixed pups, often adopted from shelters or accidental unions, bring their own blend of traits and personalities, making them true originals.

Whether you're drawn to the artistry of designer breeds or the individuality of mixed breeds, the diverse world of dogs offers a companion for every heart and home.
